Insurance group 8 - how much?!

I'm seriously looking to buy a 4x4 at some point soon but, as I currently have a small car (Hyundai i10 - group 2), I'm a bit wary as to how much the insurance will cost me for a bigger (4WD) vehicle.

I've got 8 years no claims (which I currently protect). Can anyone else offer me some ideas as to how much a group 8 vehicle would cost to insure? I know it'll depend on the actual specs, age, etc, of the vehicle itself but I'm sure someone must know roughly what a group 8 insurance policy is like compared to a group 2? :D

Insurance groups are non-sense these days.....

A group 8 might cost you £400 in one part of the country, or £900 in another.
A Bugati Veyron is group 20, but so is a Subaru Impreza WRX....

It's all about where you live, what you do for a living, age, annual mileage, etc etc etc.

Doesn't work like that. Insurance groups don't seem to mean much these days. One group 8 car could cost double another group 8 car to insure (from getting quotes for myself anyway). You need to do an online quote and see.
However with 8 years NCB I'd say the car shouldn't make too much difference. I don't imagine you pay much more than £300 now, so a 4x4 might be £450? Pure guesswork though really.

Thanks everyone - y'know, despite normally shopping around for quotes online for my own car each year, I never thought of doing it for my (hopefully) future vehicle! D'oh!

rev_henry - darned good guess - I pay about £280 now for my current car and most quotes are coming out at about £410 ish for the 4x4 I'm hoping to get at some point. :D
  • I always use confused and put down what car im thinking of buying to get rough estimates. As others have said, the groups dont mean much, the costs vary no end.

Remember not to put your phone number in though else you`ll get loads of companys phone you hassling you!

You don't say whether its group 8 on the old 1-20 system or on the new 1-50 system. I'm guessing the old one?

Best way to find out is to key the details into a comparison site.

The insurance groups as mentioned are now 1-50. The Impreza STi is around insurance group 40 now. I suspect a Veyron will be 50 somehow!

I have 10years+ no claims but i can reduce my premium slightly by adding my mum who has had claims.
Where is the sense in that?
