Missed/gaps in N.I. contributions {NI cs}

Hi, this is my first posting so please excuse any gaffs, I'm impressed with the wealth of knowledge u guys have so I wondered if anyone out there could help me ?? I have some gaps in my NI cs when I became disabled 4 yrs ago so I could not claim any benefits other than NI credits which I had to fight for right up to the independent hearing board which took just 5 mins and it was granted and back dated and I have been getting it now for over 4 yrs.
My question is will I ever be able to claim any benefits e.g. incp or sickness benefits ?? I should add that I do get disability benefit, higher rate mobility and middle care allowance, my wife seem to think that I can never claim anything now but I just can not except that is true after having worked for 40ys !
If there is anyone who can help I would be most grateful indeed.:j
