If paid in cash allways open and check the contents in front of the person giving it to you BEFORE you sign.

The amount on the pay slip MUST be the actual cash because that is the papert trail for TAX and NI.

Who check your float at the start of the day and who checks the balance at the end? Sometimes the float is wrong or the scales are faulty and reads the money wrong. Either way tills rarely balance!

DD checks the float at the start of her shift, she then stands with the manager at the end of her shift whilst her counts it and then he tells her if the till is correct...

Thats why im confused as to why the manager didnt tell her at the time that the till was short.

i asked DD about this again and she says that on new years eve the manager closed the shop at 7pm and said to her "sure go you on and i will count your till , im sure it will all be correct".

DD - being a typical 17 year old was thinking ahead to her night on the tiles lol and took the manager up on his offer and left the shop before the till was counted in her presense. (big mistake)

The next shift she worked was Thursday of this week and thats when she was told the till was short...we are assuming it was new years eve that it was short....but a as yet the second manager has not confirmed this and she wont see the manager responsible until her shift starts today at 3pm.

You no , as i type this i can see whats happened but didnt want to admit it before. Just is too much of a coincidence that the one time DD is not present whilst the till is being checked it is short !!!

DD wont leave the job....she loves the extra money....i dont want to kick up a stink incase they fire her.....What the heck should i do ?

DD doesnt earn enough to pay tax and insurance but just for sheer curiousity....

If someone did pay tax and insurance and their weekly wage was say for example £130....if £10 was deducted for a till shortage would they pay tax and insurance on the full wage of £130 or only on the reduced wage of £120 ?

Hi OP, sorry to hear of your daughter's troubles. If your DD is unwilling to raise this how about you advise her to make sure she is always there with the boss when closing to observe the till count? And at the start of the day when counting out the float if necessary? If you think the manager is taking the opportunity to help him/herself to some of DD's wages them maybe taking away the opportunity will resolve this.

It's a shame for her if she like the job. I know others are advising she leaves but she should get a new job first and then hand in her notice - it will be a lot easier to do.

Hope it gets sorted in the end.

Deductions would come out after tax/NI/pension etc (out of net not gross)

    Thanks mrspanda.

I think what you have suggested is an excellent idea. I plan on telling DD that she is not to leave until she has actually witnessed her till being counted .

Others have said that they would leave the job because of this but i think i would rather get the problem resolved than give up a job that pays a good wage. Jobs are hard enough to find at the minute without walking out of the one she has!

To be honest , i cant see this job being any more than a stop gap for DD any way . She has just turned 17 , left school in June and is now on a training course training to work in childcare. She attends college 3 days per week to study and then works in a nursery school placement the other 2 days so i would think once she gets her childcare degree she will be giving this job up anyhow...

I think the best plan of action would be your suggestion so thanks for that .

I worked in retail for 10 years and, interestingly enough, the only two people to lose their jobs for pilfering was a Manager and an Assistant Manager.

I worked at a place where you got money deducted from wages if your till was down by £3 or more. But there was a procedure first to see if the employee was at fault where they ask questions like 'did anyone else access your till' and 'did you check the float and check the till at end of day' and others. Wages should only really be deducted after this type of procedure, not just 'oh your till was down £10 so I've taken it out your wages'. For all you know the manager just took £10 straight out your wage packet and left the note.

If it happens again I will bring it up with management. And never leave without your till being checked first.

Also just a question if you work minimum wage and they take money out of your wages (after an investigation has been processed) is that illegal? Cause the place I worked was minimum wage and people got money taken from their wages.

Personally, I'd pocket £10 next shift and walk out, leaving the till open with a note saying "help yourself, you may as well, because the manger will"
