Most shops I use have it come off the available balance pretty quickly. I don't think Boots does though and that's really annoying.

I've noticed in the past that Boots is the only retailer I (and the OH) use where the debit card value never comes off the 'available'. You simply get the real debit after a couple of days. And some are sizeable transactions .... so nothing to do with floor limits.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Some banks are part of a scheme known as "faster payments" where payments will leave your account quicker then others. Online banking with accounts like Barclays and Natwest often update your balances very quickly or within 24 hours BUT those payments arent necessary cleared/authorised \t the time, (most banks i know nat west do tell you this!)

Faster Payments have nothing to do with debit card transactions. The Faster Payments scheme is for transferring funds from one bank account to another - not about making payments in stores/on-line.

Without insider knowledge of what floor and house limits Boots have set up with their bank and payment processor, you can't really say that it's nothing to do with floor limits.
