Connectiong To BT

Hello

Could anyone help me please. We are currently with Telewst but want to reduce our telephone bill down and I think going with BT will do that, but has anyone got around the new line charge as if we have to pay that it won't help.

Thanks

Has your property ever had BT fitted, or has it always had cable. If it at sometime its had BT they would possibly connect you for free.

If it has to be a new installation, £124.99 is BT's standard charge now.

My Mother changed back to BT after 10 years with Telewest and is saving a lot via 1899/18185 etc. When BT notified Telewest she got a call from TW offering all sorts of deals although nothing which would have made as big a saving.

If you need to pay BT for a new line perhaps a reduction in TW charges would be better than forking out that sort of money. As usual threatening to take you business elsewhere can be advantageous even if only a bluff!
  • Just been checking my BT Together option 1 call charges online. Found this and option 2 are now subject to Call set-up charges on most calls, seems this was introduced 01/10/2005 so calls not answered are charged for.
(so could be cheaper to stay where you are)

CALL SET-UP FEE - RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS Operative Date:01.10.2006

A Call Set-Up Fee of 2.55 pence (exc VAT) will apply to the following Call Types. Operative Date:01.10.2006

    Operator Assisted Calls (specially assisted)
International Calls (including calls to international mobiles)
Inland Calls to numbers beginning 01 and 02 and including Number Translation Services calls e.g. 0845, 0870, 0871, 08xx and including calls to premium numbers e.g. 09xx.
    Fixed-to-mobile calls
    Calls from Private Payphones
    Calls to 05xx number range
    Geographic calls using ISDN 64k

Welcome to the MSE forums ruby1.

You're right, the crafty 3p call set-up fee was introduced on 1/10/06 but, although some read it that failed calls would be subject to it, that is not the case.

You'll only pay that 3p for a call which is answered (by a machine or a person).

Another reason for dumping that 1571 'service' - so BT don't get money for calls immediately answered by 1571 when the called party is engaged on another call.

  • Thanks for the info Heinz, I tried to confirm that the charges did not attach to failed calls, but was unable to with the information in the document.

    many Thanks
  • BT also charge you for using call return on 1471. When you press 3 to return the call, you are charged 6p automatically, if the call is not answered or if its a switched off mobile phone, you are still charged 6p.

That 3p connection charge will raise to about 6p in line with NTL Telewest, BT are just testing customers to see what customers would do if they would impose a connection charge, not many people seem to have noticed it, so they could raise it to 6p.

NTL have been charging that outrageous 6p for some time now.

Where did you get the information that BT will raise theirs to 6p too - or is your afterthought 'could' near the end of the same sentence more accurate?
