Supplement for the coat condition for long haired GS?

Hi,

Used to give Zara evening primrose oil to improve her coat and it was fine for a while but now it is again very dull, matt with no shine and sticks out in every direction.

She does not have any dandruff, she has been to groomers about a month ago so is reasonably clean (LOL).

As she is long haired GS weighting 38kg - I am having a problem finding something suitable, some things I had looked at says dose 15 capsules (!!!) per day for her weight so a total no no....

I would prefer capsules than liquids, can anyone recommend something?

Please keep in mind that she is a large dog so recomendations of things that I would have to give her several tablets of per day 9as per her weight) are not going to be very useful...

Really need something suitable for large-ish dogs...

Thanks a lot

  • I use wilkos dog vitamins 99p for 30 and they are great, my last dog was 16. I reckon a good quality dog food would be the best way forward too :)

Thanks but I was not asking about multivitamin types - I am asking specifically about evening primrose oil or anything else specifically for the coat.

Zara is on Orijen so pretty good quality...

    Thanks anyway.

This si what I used to give her:

.. and just found on on chemist direct site for £3.09, at PART it is much more expensive....

I guess I better order the same then, used to give her 3 capsules per day so a bottle of 90 lasts a month....

Anyone using anything else for the same issue?

    Thanks a lot

I don't give Oakley anything extra, but he does go a bit dull if I don't brush him for a day or so, so he gets an extra Furminate (ooh err) and his coat looks lovely and shiny after that. I think it's the dust he gathers in his coat that makes him look dull...

Oils, get some tinned fish (mackrel is cheap) in sunflower oil, the oil from both the fish and the sunflower oil will help her coat :)
I'm not a bloke! :rotfl:My real name is Sinead, Sid is my nickname :rotfl:

Caroline - that is it, kind of dusy looking, like her twin Oakley LOL

Gave her a bit of a brush now with the evening primrose oil conditioning spray on a brush (smells lovely - she does not liek it though ) and she looks a bit better.

I limit the furminator to once per month as went over the top with it when I got it first time.. ermmmm ;)

Sid-Wolf, yup sardines... good idea, thanks... cheaper than tune or salmon ;)

Slightly off topic here... just to let you know that her twin got weighed just before Christmas (we were away for Christmas and New Year, so off the pair of them went to kennels) Annie plus her box weighed a gentle 7.5kg. However.... MonsterDog was heavier than the scales would show (and it was one of those massive old fashioned ones!) - we reckon around 57kg... and not an ounce of fat. I'm not giving him any oil based fish, he really doesnt need to get fat too!! :rotfl: so he can just stay dull!

I work with GSDs ranging from 25kg - 54kg and if any of them look like they have lost condition in their coat I use Yumega oil in their food. Really makes them come up lovely and one bottle usually lasts 2 dogs sharing about a month.

coconut oil is dead cheap in any asian shop and comes in jars or bottles ( check around to make sure it is ok for dogs)
Any oil in bottle serving is going to be loads cheaper than capsules. I agree though that oily fish in cans is a good option as I am sure fish oils are better absorbed than vegetable oils.

Someone in rescue once recommended putting a spoonful of sunflower oil (your bog standard stuff) in my dogs food and the difference to his coat was amazing!
