Romantic city break for students, any suggestions?

Hi MSE forumites.

I was wondering if anyone could offer any gem of wisdom...

My girlfriend and I are looking into taking a short city break towards the end of this month. We're both students, but have time off, and we both work part-time (enough so that a short holiday is warranted!). This will be the first time we've gone away together, and the first time we've gone away without our respective families.

We're looking towards a 3/4 day city break to Europe (don't want to waste time to jetlag), something with a mix of culture and night-life a big plus.

We're looking to spend up to around £250 each. That needs to include flights, accommodation, and spending money. Of course, anything a little over wouldn't be completely out of the question.

I've looked at information available, and it seems that lastminute.com might be the best place to find somewhere.

The only thing we're lacking are suggestions. Where can we go where its relatively inexpensive to buy a pint? To eat out at affordable prices. Can anyone suggest particular bars/clubs, museums, experiences.

I'd like to make it memorable for us both. But I'm guessing places like Paris and Venice will be expensive...

Thanks in anticipation.

For £250 each your options will be very limited for Europe.

You don't say were you can travel from.

My suggestion would be to look on both the Ryanair and Easyjet for cheap flights (they have sales on) from your local airport. See whats on offer and then pick a city.

  • I would suggest easyjet/ryanair flights and staying in a hotel or hostel booked online (hostelworld is good for hostels, I find booking.com or venere good for hotels)

I went to Krakow in Poland last year and it's beautiful. However I went in June, it might be a bit chilly in January. Cheap though, and has a good mix of culture and nightlife. Eastern Europe is probably going to be your best bet on a tight budget, provided you can get the flights. Prague might be a good shout too (although I haven't been there myself)

Lisbon is also very underrated as a short break destination but might be a bit over your budget.

Alternatively, have you thought of going somewhere a bit closer to home? There are some lovely places in the UK and it'd be a little cheaper for a short amount of time... Bath? Cambridge? Edinburgh? York? You can still do all the couply / romantic holiday things there too :)
