Compromised cash points are more likely to put my mum at risk of theft than the shop is to be at risk from accepting chip and sig cards. So the 'for your own good' is nonsense and it is more for the shops own good. If a chip and sig card won't be taken then it needs to be displayed clearly so that customers know in advance rather than waiting until they offer a legitimate payment method for it to be refused.

The shop is not interested in cash point fraud. Why would they be? Or are you (to use your own words again) doubly thick in not understanding that?

I find the till trout and doubly thick comment from the OP objectionable...so yes, maybe we have different standards and I am better than you thought.
Possibly, generally I find you a decent, respectable member, so am surprised.

I much preferred how post 3 dealt with this issue.........
Not a regulation, but just a tip...

Probably best not to use the phrase 'till trout' in your complaint letter.

I thought post #2 covered the situation succinctly. The OP was wrong.

Yes I do agree post #2 was more to the point. Short, swift and sweet.

"not taking that payment form for your own good", bwa ha ha ha !!! Sounds like the kind of cashier who demands ID for quiche.

As you now know OP, there's no requirement for shops to accept any given form of payment so they are within their rights to say no, but in that situation faced with such a stupid comment I would have stood my ground and demanded a manager there and then.

Although the shop can refuse to sell to anyone they choose by refusing to sell purely because the card was chip and sig they are probably acting outside of their user agreement with their merchant aquirer. They may also be breaching DDA laws, many people have these cards because of a disability. If the OP wants to pursue it their best option would be to contact the card supplier and the HO of the retailer if they are part of a chain. Many staff do not know what to do when they see one of these cards as they are not very common but the terminal does know what to do and will print out a signature receipt. It is usually down to poor training, being thick or a combination of both.

My mum doesn't want chip and pin. She'd struggle with it as she's hopeless with keypads and any gadgety thing. If the keypads were dial phones she'd be ok!

She's only got one because lots of places refuse to take cheques even with a guarantee card. There are extra security checks available through card machines which they could have easily used but no, they want to send a pensioner to a city centre cash point for her own good rather than a) accepting the card with further checks or b) just accepting the card and making sure the customer knew they do not normally do this.

It's the attitude of the girl at the till that was most annoying. The senior manager person wasn't there unfortunately. I'm sure she would have been more helpful.

I used to be able to pay by cheque almost everywhere...but more and more places refuse that form of payment now.
I think I must be the only person who would rather pay for everything by cheque.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted:)
    I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p
