I'm not wasteful with food but I've decided to stop buying lettuce as it usually gets thrown out and I've realised that you can have a salad without it and I don't actually like it!

  • JAckieO: I've just bought some tins of sardines - haven't had them for ages and so looking forward to some sards on toast later!
I do end up throwing stuff out but am trying really hard this year to control my shopping better and so far so good (admittedly only a week in...)

Hmmmm, someone must be wasting my share. I spend circa £50 pcm on housekeeping (singleton household) which includes non-food items such as cleaning supplies. Have a great local greengrocer who has a bargain box of slightly-tired items at 3 bagfuls for £1, sometimes 4 for £1 if its late in the day. Have to be very careful with the stock control on those or the item gets wasted into the compost which severely annoys me. Ate up some tinned fruit from Mum's cupboard which she'd let go 4 years past its best before date and wouldn't eat herself. That was months ago and haven't noticably come to any harm. Those yellow tickets at Mr T's are a temptation, aren't they? Must resist, freezer's full of 'em.

Or sardine pizza? Sounds odd but is delicious and works fine with tinned sardines, I first had it in spain, it's gorgeous with a hm rustic pizza base with lots of tomatoes and olives.

Now i'm sooo tempted to whip up some dough and do a sardine pizza for my lunch!! Next tinned fish adventure: a 600g tin of roe!

Your roses will love the skins in the spring and summer as the potassium is something that benefits them greatly. Just chucked at the base is all you need to do - they will turn black and then compost as natural stuff does. Result - lovely roses and a feel-good-factor not having just chucked them away.....!

My garden is half patio and the rest a small patch of grass that my DGS mows for me in the summer. My gardening days are long gone I'm afraid.I have a couple of pots with some hebes in and thats about all .I sadly can no longer grow much in my garden as bending with my clapped out joints means once I was down I'd be stuck :eek:But I will ask my neighbour who does have lots of roses if he wants them Good tip for those who have gardens

I'm ashamed to admit it but I easily waste £10 a month....mainly on meat!!
As a single person I really struggle to eat meat quick enough and quite often through it away. Now I've started watching the pennies I've monitored what gets thrown out and in the last week alone I've lost to the bin....
1/2 a packet of low fat pate
1 chicken breast (3 days in the fridge and smelt like death)
The last scrapings of a tub of Flora (I only have 1 shelf in the fridge and I needed to fit the new whole tub of spread in)
    A suspiciously squishy lettuce!

Open the pate, take out half to use and freeze the rest for next time. Same with the chicken if it was prepacked and cooked.
Why did you not put the last scrapings of Flora into the new tub?
Anything you buy look and see if it can be split up and frozen into smaller portions for later.

Yes if I buy sandwich meat and packs of Pate and then find dates are going to conflict for when they have to be use I throw it in the freezer and use it at some other time.

  • Thanks for the tip about freezing the pate - I never manage to use it all up in time.

I have also wasted lots of lettuce and half eaten salad bags over the years as it is hard to eat it all before it goes off, especially if there is only one or two of you.

Growing my own salad leaves in the garden largely resolved this for me last year however my other tactic is to buy salad leaves that can be used both hot and cold. So if I had a packet of rocket (which seems to go off almost as soon as you open the bag) I would eat in a salad, add to sandwiches, throw on a pizza and also include in a pasta sauce (Jamie Oliver has a great prawn & rocket recipe for spaghetti); baby spinach leaves are nice in salad but also cooked as a vegetable, added to pasta or curry dishes. Watercress is lovely for salad, adds crunch in sandwiches and can be added to strir fries or oriental style noodle soups. I've also started experimenting more with adding herbs (parsley, chervil, coriander) to salads as well as cooking with them.

Potatoes and carrots are the vegetables that often go to waste in this household I'm afraid though as they are often bought in a big bag that we don't get through. I'll try and remember to freeze the carrots now after reading this thread.

Have you tried these growing salad trays? More expensive than normal lettuce leaves but you can leave on your windowsill chop of what you need and then if left for a while more grows. I have put the pot outside when finished (or so I though) waiting to get around to putting the compost on the garden an a few weeks later I have more leaves to eat ☺
