Dell Inspiron 1300 CD/DVD drive

My neice has a Dell Inspiron 1300 with a CD/DVD drive. We've noticed that it won't read CD's, but it will read DVD's. I wondered if the driver might have become corrupt so I troubleshot it and it came back with the "all well". So I restored the laptop to the earliest time possible, which was a date in August, but still no joy. I then undid the restore.

We have only nticed the problem today, so cannot be sure if it existed beyond the last possible restore date available in August.

Does anyone know what the problem might be and how we can fix it? As I say, DVD's read ok, but when I put a cd in it displays "windows cannot read the file type or the files may be corrupted". We've tried several cd's in the drive and all will not work, then to be doubly sure we tried the cd's in another pc's drive and they do read ok then.
