Lets hope this answer can prove as helpful as the last!
Im bidding on a Dell Lattitude D620 laptop from Ebay, but the listing says no HDD or Caddy.
Not being the most techie person in the world, could anybody tell me what this means?
Thanks!

It means it has no hard drive in it, the bit the stores the operating system, your files etc.. They're not expensive to buy but it makes life so much easier if it comes with one!

'no HDD' means that the laptop does not have a hard drive in it, so you will have to source an internal laptop hard drive (around £30). You may also have issues with a windows licence if that is also not provided with the laptop.
A caddy is normally an external container that you can put a hard drive or DVD drive in. I am not sure what they mean in this context unless they are trying to ensure bidders understand there is no hard drive of any description supplied.0 -
most laptops have a little caddy that the internal HDD sits in, sometimes it changes the pin configuration to suit that particular laptop.0

Basically you need to factor in the cost of a 2.5 in disk and an operating system (although Linux is generally free)4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0

Mind you if you have no problems using linux (on your travels to [STRIKE]espana[/STRIKE] estonia then run linux from a USB stick

i have an WD external hard drive, could i use this to put on the operating system? or do I defiantly need an internal laptop drive?
thanks again in advance!0 -
You can buy a new hard disk anywhere, the internal caddy may be harder to find, (search ebay). Some machines support booting from usb, but it's not really worth considering, laptops are supposed to be portable.
It may make more sense to find a more complete laptop, with hard disk and operating system, unless what you are bidding on is a real bargain.!!

If the lappy has USB and or a CD then no you can use an external disk or usb and a live linux CD/USB stick I am not familar with the Dell lappy you are talking about but my neighbours DELL lappy would not work so I booted from my Linux USB stick and checked out that the disk on her lappy was dead, and she worked ok with Linux until she could get a new internal disk(and the stuck with Linux too silly girl )4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . if it will boot from USB. hopefully it should be new enough to do this,
simply buy a 16G usb and you will even have room for some file storage as well.

The D620 didn't use a caddy I believe apart from the black bit for the casing that attached to the HDD so you push it in to the slot then two screws held the drive in place.
Could be greyish on the 620 also its an old laptop so not worth the hassle.0
