Unfortunately as you stated it is a guest bed, and it not designed for everyday use as a result Tesco really are unlikely to move on this one.

I was looking for a new bed + mattress this year and generally found anything that came with a mattress, the mattress was of terrible quality. In one shop, (the bed wasn't cheap either) we asked about the mattress included in the deal and we were horrified, it was about 3 inches thick and as soon as you sat on it you could feel the base.

I know you said that you don't really want to be buying a new one, and if the one you are using for now is suitable then I would stick to that but have a look around and take your daughter with you, get her to try some out mattresses. Personally I can't speak highly enough of IKEA mattresses (no I don't work there!) we bought ours from there, was one of the most comfortable ones around, 4 months later it still feels like brand new.
Prices start from about £30 for a single foam mattress (although Ive never tried that one) and a sprung one from £56.
The way I see it is a mattress is an investment, something that's going to last a good few years.

I agree with the first half of your post. However Ikea mattresses are poor quality. Granted they may be better than some of those included with some (not all) guest beds, but you can buy far better for similar prices from UK manufacturers ( mainly from independents).

I think other posters are correct. Anything called a guest bed is not designed for daily use. Guest beds don't tend to be that comfy but they're fine for the occasional guest who crashes.

You mentioned that it was a divan. Is it a standard size, e.g. single? If so, you should be able to buy a new mattress and keep the base (and the pull-out part for guests).

There are single mattresses available for less than £100 and better brands come in if you up the budget to £100-150. We've used this site before to replace a single mattress on a spare bed at home:
    http://www.mattressman.co.uk/all/mattresses/mattresses/single/P0S0L/view_single_mattresses.aspx

As this is for daily use for your daughter, you'll want to visit mattress shops and actually feel/test the mattresses. Once you find some you like, shop around online.

You can actually get good quality, deep quilted single mattresses for around £60, and they would be better quality than the big brand equivalents. However if the OP stores the guest bed under the main bed, then they would have to check to gap to make sure that the replacement mattress would actually fit.

    Hi Tim,

I am on the look out for a new mattress, I have tried John Lewis "special" at £599 it was ok, also a Harrison at an independant shop at £999, it was very comfortable. I am afraid I am of the understanding that dearer has to be better and that cheaper has to be inferior, end of story, I also find that a mattress is a very difficult item to compare unlike other items in life ie the workings are covered up. I would bow to your knowledge in the industry if you can convince me of similar materials being used but larger mark ups being fixed by the main names?

    Thanks

This is also a good company http://www.mattressmania.ltd.uk/ they are a sub company of a family run business near where I live. The good thing with them is that they have a freephone number you can phone (directly to the shop) and explain what you are after and they can point you in the right direction of what mattress would be best suited for you.

As for the OP I have to say I agree with what others are saying if it was advertised as a guest bed then it would indicate that it is for occasional use even if it is unfortunately bad quality :(

They are actually very expensive, but this is probably due to them being a shop with an internet arm, rather than being internet only.

I would only ever advise people to buy from sellers who have a land line number where they can actually speak to the retailer and ask advice first.

Harrison are one of the better of the big brands. However even they have started introducing all sorts of gimmicks over recent years.

I think you find that they been introducing gimmicks for over a hundred years:D
I quite like the pocketed spring inside a pocketed spring idea,I need another bed at home so I will make my own using this method.

Believe me, most of the gimmicks have appeared within the last 10 years or so.

I presume you are joking about the spring within spring system?? That is one of the worse gimmicks, apart from maybe pillow tops.

OP, also remember that your 3 y/o won't have the same effect on the mattress as you did. She will be very light in comparison so may not be as uncomfortable or unsupported as an adult would be.

It's plain and simple, they are just a completely useless gimmick that is used to push the spring count up. They tell people the more springs the better (which is untrue), and then use this type of spring system to push up the number of springs. It's just a gimmick used to baffle customers into spending more money.
