Hi,
It sounds to me like explorer.exe - the windows process that handles all your icons and menus, is not starting correctly. Try this:
Once you get to the black screen:- Hold CTRL+ALT+DEL, you should be presented with the task manager
- Click File > New Task (Run)
- In the "Create New Task" window, type "explorer.exe" (without the quotes)
- Click OK
See what happens

Go through Safe Mode.0

Sounds like windows is dead, few things you can try, as mentioned already, go in in safe mode and see if you can roll back to a previous safe point.
You could also try putting your windows disk in and running a windows repair, could just be some corrupted files.
Tell us how that goes

Hi,
I posted these instructions for another user yesterday to get them into safe mode from "normal" mode:- Click Start > Run
- Type "msconfig" (without quotes). Press OK.
- On the "boot.ini" tab there are a series of tickboxes - one of which says /SAFEBOOT. This should then activate a set of radio boxes to the right, one of which says network. Select this option.
- Click ok. You should be prompted to restart your computer.
- Follow my steps from the post above.
Before you reboot again you need to undo these steps or the computer will not boot into "normal" mode:- Click Start > Run
- Type "msconfig" (without quotes). Press OK.
- On the "boot.ini" tab untick the box for which says /SAFEBOOT.
- Click ok. You should be prompted to restart your computer.

I remember this being a common problem at one point but quite some time ago? are you certain your security patches were automatically kept up to date.
Do a bit of googling for "vista black desktop" issue/problem some describe having the mouse, some didn;t have the mouse, not sure if thats relevant.0
