no hot water in tap or shower

hi, desperate for some help.

we live in a rented house and if we cant find the answer here i'll call the landlord in the morning.

our showers (x2) and all taps dont give out any hot water.
there is a switch on the wall for hot water that we used all the time for the shower, and the central heating is working fine although i think the 2 systems are unrelated. anyone got any ideas for anything we can try to get the hot water working? cold water comes out so im assuming the pipes are not frozen, and it hasnt been cold enough lately anyway. we've been here 2 years with no problems before now

What kind of boiler do you have? and what temp has it been where you are the last few days?

We had the same problem a few weeks ago when it was -8 plus at night and it was a frozen pipe - as we have a condenser boiler, the heating is on a separate system from the tap hot water (although obviously the boiler heats them both).
  • i know it sounds daft but im not sure what type of boiler it is, this is a first home for us both. our boiler comes on when we turn the central heating on, but i've never heard it on for the hot water, the switches are on the same wall but about 6ft apart.
we live near york, its been around -1 but 4 weeks ago it was -15 and we had no probems then. i know the boiler is gas powered if this makes any difference?

Does it look like boiler on this page (scroll down)

    Or more like this

often with lagging or insulation wrapped around it.

We've never had any problems before this year and last year was pretty darned cold too :)
  • we have both! there is a boiler like the first one in the kitchen, which is what we turn on for the heating. it has a control panel beneath it that i think from memory says lifestyle 400.

i did notice earlier a button on it that says hot water advance. we've never used it before, but i pressed it and will see if we have hot water later.

in one of the showers we have the tank like the one in the second picture, it is right next to the shower and i always assumed this is where our hot water comes from,

thanks for your replies, does this help any?

Not for me but hopefully it might help someone with more expertise answer your question later.

All I can say tentatively is that it doesn't sound like you have a combi boiler.
  • Is there a thermostat on the cylinder (probably a small device strapped to the side with a temperature dial on it)? If so it might be faulty. Is there a pump and three way valve somewhere - could be a stuck valve or actuator.
