Peer to Peer Car Hire

I saw this talk on TED

The Case For Collaborative Consumption
By Rachel Botsman at TED Dec 17, 2010

(You can google this and it's the first video result)

Which prompted me to see if my car can make anything on UK P2P car hire pages.

I found Whip Car and have posted my car's profile.

Has anyone else had experience with anything like this? Or am I the guinea pig for everyone, in which case wish me luck!

Chris

  • I considered it, but then discovered Streetcar and Citycarclub when they launched in Glasgow. After trialling both on promotional subscriptions, I think I'm going to be staying with Streetcar. It's not that Whip Car was worse value, I was just attracted to a slightly newer, more consistent fleet.
  • Thanks, interesting review of the two I'll take that into account next time I go north, perhaps i can fly and hire instead of doing the 10 hour drive. :) I have seen street car as well but I'm on the other end. I have a car I don't use so I'm trying to make it cost neutral by hiring it out at weekends. Can you hire out your own car on Street Car?

There's a company in America doing a similar thing called Relay Rides. It does look like a decent service, they actually come and stick a device on your car, so you can let any other member come and drive it.

Can't really see it taking off on a national level though.

Insurance tends to be the killer with this sort of thing unfortunately. In the US policies tend to be more flexible than here.
  • Whip car insure the car for the period of rental.

However there was a more indepth, if pessimistic, forum on here already.

Forums > Work and Benefits > Up Your income > whip car

(Sorry, I can't post links yet)

I'm now trying to think of ways to activley advertise my car to the right people.

Whip has been featured a few times in various papers. One guy who I think was a doctor was renting out his car with them to cover the costs of his HP not realising that most HP agreements prohibit rental or hire of the vehicle.
