Disability Severe Allowance are no longer in force!

That is very nice, but I was referring to Disabled Students Allowance (was there ever such a thing as Disability Severe Allowance?). ;)

You can't get IS on this basis. You can get IS if:

    a lone parent
    on parental or paternity leave
    a carer
a refugee learning English who arrived less than a year ago

Yes, that's what I was alluding to earlier when I said that I thought that those with disabilites were removed from the exceptions leaving only single parents and carers. Thanks for confirming.
 You'd have to do this for IS too.

Oh, yes, I know. That was just some unnecessary addition....don't know why I put that. Sorry :o

You don't have a condition of entitlement to Income Support. So that leaves ESA if you're so unwell you can't work ... and JSA if you're fit for work.

From what you say, you're well enough to claim JSA. But you won't be available for either full time or part time work because your course hours are too long ... so you can't claim JSA either.

Which basically means you're in no different a position than most other Uni students, tbh, studying hard & skint ... it comes with the territory.

lol, that is the stereotype (although not a particularly true one in my experience :p: ) Previous years have been quite comfortable. So I guess it's only fair I have one tight year.

I just never expected this degree to go on for as long as it has. It's very frustrating being in this position, especially when friends and relatives graduated long ago and are well into their jobs. But not long to go now!

From what's posted you're not entitled to income support or ESA. As you're getting full time money for a part time hours could you perhaps squeeze a few hours at a job in to make the money up?

The application for ALF will be difficult if you gave away £1,000 only a couple months ago, also some unis restrict the amount that part time students can get from hardship anyway. They will probably tell you to think yourself lucky as most part timers get hee haw.

Seems a bit of a strange thing to only just remember, but as I've just remembered that I'm paying full tuition fees this year (or would be if I were paying them) then I'm clearly classed as full time.

Just a few months ago I thought I wouldn't be eligible for the loan or grant, so I'm pleased that I am.

And I do receive housing benefit. Just wish I'd applied for DLA back in 2007 when first diagnosed. Probably needed it more then than I do now tbh.

Anyhoo, when applying for ALF are only current account bank statements required or also things like ISAs? From what I remember it was only current accounts.

The money came from a different account but, even so, it'll be my assisstant senior tutor who'll make the decision and the very reason why things are getting thin is because of the parental position. So surely the university will be symapthetic to this?

My !!!. Senior Tutor did promise me that they'll make sure I am financially supported so she's obviously my next stop.

Have you not applied for DSA? Had you done this, you would have probably received a book allowance.

I've claimed DSA since I first started in 2004 and receive a combined book and photocoping allowance of £400. Even so, I've had to spend far more than that this year as, for one topic in particular, the library has been particularly poor. They either don't have the books, the books are missing, or there just aren't enough to go around. With some books costing up to £80 it doesn't go far.

It might seem unwise spending this amount of books when finances are running thin but I had little option. I couldn't make document delivery requests for the items or find them in other regional libraries and, if I need them for work...

The number of books I've bought over the six years has given me quite an inventory and I'm just about to start a bookselling business (books have always been a passion of mine - I have a couple of first editions I can sell too). I think it'll take a while to get off the ground but it should hopefuly provide some "pocket money".

I'm also going to do some mystery shopping which will give me about £20 extra a month on average. Something like that is fine because I can obviously pick the assignments around the times I'm free so is flexible in that sense.

Anyway, you've all confirmed what I thought was probably the case so thank you all. I've also found out one or two other things of interest. You've all been a great help!

    Thanks for your time.
