Cost of Self Storage

I will be moving home within the next few months and am thinking about renting a small storage room from somewhere like Big Yellow so I can stagger things which will make it easier for me.

I have had a look around on-line and can't find any upfront indication of prices.

Is anyone able to give me a clue how much the basic storage rooms would cost?

Many thanks

Err, I've got a room from BY of 150 sq ft and its costing me £140 per 4 weeks. If you can get a cheap quote from somewhere else, they should match the price!
  • Many thanks for that. I don't know quite what I expected, but I didn't think it would be that much! At least I have a baseline to compare to.
    Thank you.

secure warm storage is very expensive.
you need to work out how long you will need it and is it worthwhile storing the goods?

can friends and family not help you out?

I've just paid £78 for three months on a "big locker" that's 4'x4' and 8' tall. That's at an independent storage company.

One of the problems is that people don't know how much space they need... so tend to either get quotes for too large a space, or rent something a bit larger than needed.

I just wish mine wasn't 20 miles away, which was the closest there is round my way

I am having to move at quite short notice when I don't really want to and it's going to be difficult for my physically as I am disabled. I hoped that by doing things bit by bit it would make things easier for me physically and psychologically.
I have no idea how long I will have to store for as it's going to be quite difficult for me to find somewhere else that's suitable

My Dad has some outbuildings but they are stables so they aren't weather proof. Maybe a tarpauline over and under the goods would help as it will be clothes, books, lamps etc rather than the big bits of furniture.
The only other friend who would be able to help me is 60 miles away, so not really practical.

Sorry, I ran off at the mouth there!

I'm quite lucky as the place I was thinking of (Britannia Lanes) is just over half a mile away.

I've been looking at storage prices myself - I compared prices for 50 sq ft. which is about half the size of a single garage, so not very big. However, I thought you might like to know that Safestore will beat any quote and it also takes Tesco Clubcard vouchers. They also have special offers on - so def. worth checking out.

    Definitely look at independent locals....

A couple close to me rented me a crate at approx 4.00 a day.

Crate was big enough for 2x sofas and assorted boxes.

It was a mimimum of 2 weeks rental and you needed to give 48hours notice of any visit / collection, but was well worth it to store stuff mid move.

  • I rented a store (100 sq ft) when my husband and i seperated, initially to store his share of the furniture, and the stuff i physically couldnt get into my new place, and also the garden stuff etc. It was horrendously expensive, (170 pcm) but i negotiated as they gave reductions to people employed by certain organisations, and also for restricted access. I could only get to my stuff between 0800 - 1900 weekdays and 0900 - 1400 weekends.

Their packaging was also a rip off (excuse the pun), bought my tape from the market, and got boxes from free cycle :T

Worth it though, clean, dry, insured, and secure. Cameras in all the corridoors so i had no issues with wandering around there on my own!
