URGENT HELP PLEASE - picking up puppy at 6pm

we're due to view (and probably come away with) a puppy tongiht in 2 hours time, the woman says shes KC registered, what proof can we ask to see?

Also, is there any way to tell if the puppy's had the relevant jabs, chekcs etc, or do we take the lady word for it?

Thanks in advance

A good breeder is unlikelym but not totally impossibly...to want you to take the puppy tonight even if its ready because she'll ant to know you have thought about it. She'll tell you the down sides of the breed as well as the pluses. The pups will have paperwork (which you'll see but might have to be sent off by breeder) and vaccination books for you to take home.

A good breeder will give you comprehensive feeding advice and tell you to call with questions. If this doesn't happen be wary. They'll be cute and you won't want to leave it there but its often better to sleep on it.

Thank you for making sure you are using a good breeder. I hope it all works out.

The one and only time I had a pedigree pup she came with her KC certificate (family tree, reg name) and an official (practice stamped) record of her jabs/worming from the vet and also her microchip documents.

Just to add, her breeder interviewed me when I saw her at four weeks, followed up a reference I gave and gave me a reference on them to follow up (unusual breed so small world!), I saw her again at eight weeks and paid a deposit and the finally took her home at 13 weeks. The breeder sent me weekly pics/progress updates.

I would be very wary of someone who would allow you to take a puppy home after viewing it for the first time. This can very easily unsettle the puppy - almost all reputable breeders will want you to socialise with the puppy on several occasions first.

Sounds like a newspaper/preloved/gumtree job to me.

When i bred my GS last year they all came with their own KC registered paperwork with their name and my name on, these were then signed by me and sent off to be registered by the new owner. They also had their first vaccination certificate and the next worming tablet. They also went with a few days worth of food and written instructions on how much and what times of day to feed them. They also had identifying collars on as each one so as the new owners new their puppy.

I would be suprised if a good breeder just let you come and take one away straight away as well as all mine had been pre booked beforehand. I also turned quite a few prospective owners away as i could see they hadnt got a clue about Shepherds.

Just because a breeder lets you view and take a pup there and then doesn't make them a bad breeder. Maybe this pup has been advertised as ready now rather then say advertising them as ready for viewing and deposit secures pup.

I'm not saying that I agree with allowing a buyer to take the pup on the first visit, because I'm not keen on that. However, I haven't been involved with a breeder who required any more than one visit in advance (though many allowed more if the pup was booked early) so I don't think that it is fair to say that almost all reputable breeders would require several visits.

If I bred a litter I would either have contact with the people which I was confident in prior to them coming (ie if they are a distance away and it takes a while to arrange coming to pick up anyway), or I would ask them to return in a day or two to pick up the pup, just to make sure that it was not a spur of the moment decision for them. If they couldn't wait two days then they aren't keen enough on my pup tbh.

Maybe they have but all we know is that he is viewing and possibly bringing a pup home and thats all we know. The breeder may have asked for references and communicated with him via the phone and email.
