Help - PC won't fire up!

Hi all,

After unpacking my pc after moving, when I try to power it on the fan kicks in for a couple of seconds but then the machine makes a beep and it dies. Then a few seconds later it tries again but the same thing happens.

I've tried to make sure all of the connections are in place but am stuck as to what might have died / got disconnected / broken in transit.

Any ideas are gratefully received!

Likely to be a loose adapter or cable connector. You do not say whether you checked external or internal connections?. Assume you have a desktop or tower PC. Important*****, unplug from mains. Take lid off ( usually 6 or so screws ). Unplug then replug all internal connections and adapter cards. Restore lid, connect power then see if all OK. If not, reply with model info etc.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I opened it up and checked as many cables as I could see and get to without taking out the DVD drive, etc. It's an ACER ASPIRE X3200 if that helps?

Can you describe exactly what it does when you try and start it.
The fact you are getting a beep is helpful - is anything appearing on screen?
Maybe remove the motherboard battery for a couplle of minutes then replace.

Hi, nothing's happening on the monitor, my guess is because it's only powering up for a couple of seconds. At least it's doing something so it could be worse!

When I try to power it up the blue light comes on for a second as usual, the fan kicks in like it's powering up but after a couple of seconds there's a beep and it dies.

I'll try to take it apart for a few minutes and put it back together again to see if that helps.

If still fail, then next step would be to drop PC to minimum configuration (disconnect HDD, DVD,video cards,sound card etc) , try boot, if boot gets further than before,OK, add resource one at a time, retrying boot and so on, until the one causing the issue surfaces. If that fails, then likely failed motherboard and/or power supply. If at all unsure of any of this, it may be wiser to involve someone with a little experience.

Worth checking the CPU fan connection and removing / reseating the RAM as high fairly on the list (take static precautions)

Thats not a trivial job, you need thermal paste to reattach the heat sink if you do that. other advice about disconnecting everything non-essential is good tho, also perhaps try removing RAM and running with only one stick (possibly needs to be in a specific /primary slot that always needs to be filled, try each on their own in turn to eliminate the posibility of a faulty one)
