Rip Off Britain - On the Telly

I'd never seen this TV show until last night but I'd recommend it to anyone. It's brilliant.
Three old birds (who look they keep Boots No. 5 and tena lady in business) search the UK for people who have been ripped off.
If the people are a fair representation of the UK population we've had it.
Last night there was a focus on cash for gold companies. One lady, who declared herself a collector of jewellery, decided to sell some of her gold via one of these companies to meet her normal outgoings.
She popped the gold in an envelope and sent it off. Believe it or not the cheque she received was for a small amount of money. The research she did AFTER sending the gold off indicated that offer was some way off the spot price.
I was very surprised. I would have thought that a cash for gold company advertising on day time telly would be offering the best prices.

I had this on in the background.
Even better was a lady complaing about bank charges coming out of her account. My favourite bit was when she said she had an interest free overdraft "to keep her out of debt".
WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK AN OVERDRAFT IS!0 -
I saw this for the first time yesterday too. I only caught the bit about the gold companies but I couldn't believe Jenny Bond sitting there saying 'I would advise anyone against doing this'.
If I owned one of those compaines I'd be livid. What gives you the right to intimate to the public that I'm doing something dishonest and that Trading Standards should be involved. Particularly when no-one from any of the companies named was given a chance to represent themselves.

I wouldn't mind an interest free overdraft, of say £10million for life, I wouldn't feel like it was a debt either, would be a nice little earner

Obviously not illegal but a nice little earner
I agree if I was taking the (not so smart) public to the cleaners I would be livid too.

Personally if anyone is happy to put gold in an envelope, & send it off without a pre-agreed price, needs their heads looking at.
Caveat emptor and all that.Blacklight wrote: »I saw this for the first time yesterday too. I only caught the bit about the gold companies but I couldn't believe Jenny Bond sitting there saying 'I would advise anyone against doing this'.

This post is just nonsense. Of course, if you were the director of such a company, you'd have the option of suing for libel. Unless of course the producers had evidence of your misdemeanors. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

maybe the people who have been run out of business on gold could offer cash for homes instead. put the deeds in an envelope and receive a cheque by return post. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0

I cannot stand that programme. It makes me want to punch Angela Rippon and I'm not a violent person!
It's just common sense. I know there are apparently quite a lot of people out there who lack common sense but I just can't watch it without getting angry.
Why have I suddenly got an American spellchecker on this? I didn't have one at all before?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Yes, that is well annoying.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
I've not seen it.
I keep having to rip up letters that arrive for an octogenarian here, which seem to be legitimate (they're very convincing), saying she's won a prize - and to phone a number.... and the small print says it's at £1.50/minute and the call lasts 5mins56secs, which we all know will mean 6 minutes by the time you've put the phone down... so a cool £9.
I have to take each one, find the small print and charges, read it out, then point to it and get her to read it out loud, then I snatch it off her and shred it
Tough love going on, but the message has got through .... but I still am asked to check each one because she's still got a small niggling doubt that she's missing the chance of a lifetime and that maybe I'm wrong.... so it's a tough journey getting her fully clued in.0
