I advocate savings ( esp if you are a family that do save )

I always have the cost of emergencies saved in my tins - if not used come the end of the year it goes into my isa fund

Read the fine print....it's only 50% off for the first year. It's good for basic cover. The standard cover is quite cheap but only covers fees up to £2,500 and conditions of up to 12 months. The extra covers fees up to £4,000 over the lifetime of the condition but will only pay up to £1,000 for complementary therapy. That could be such things as massage therapy after pulling a muscle or after being in a collison with a vehicle and if it needed it weekly could be well over £1,000. There is also £60 or £120 excess which is quite fair most policies do that. Third party liability is a must for a dog. You may say it won't bite someone else ever but it may very well do so by being teased into biting a small child or anyone else this will cover you. If you paid anything reasonable for the dog/cat then the get additonal benefits cover to cover advertising, accidental death and boarding fees if owner has to go into hospital. Also if you ever take pet to europe on holiday then get the travel cover add on.

So over 10 year the insurance will cost £1,750 without the travel cover. I'd make sure you either had that money ready to pay the vet or save £15 monthly or take out insurance. Your choice.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

thanks for the advice around tesco. Are there any policies that are highly recommended within the Money saving and pet forums ? ? just so many to choose from, dont know where to begin
  • I have a shih tzu to. He is 10 months old. I called most of the insurance companies and they were ridiculously expensive. I ended up going with NFU. They have a good reputation, £50 excess (which is a good things as you don't want to spend an absolute fortune before you make a claim) and they pay per condition They were reasonably cheap - I think £200 ish a year - which is miles better than the £600 M&S and all the other insurance agencies were quoting.

I feel more comfortable having insurance. You never know what is around the corner and I wouldn't want to have to make a difficult decision about my dog's health because of lack of funds.
  • I just checked More than for a quote for my dog. They want £408 for one dog and I have 4 so about £1600 a year. I remember why I don't bother now. Fortunately we have the money if they do need treatment because the insurance cost is unbelievable.
