Thought it was a family of six that allotments were meant to feed??? - as in = they had bigger families then.
Umm...what size is a rod? So what size would a traditional allotment be in modern measurements (pleads personal preference for having it in feet and inches:) please)
Nope, it's definately a family of four for a 10 rod allotment. It's in the Dig for Victory booklet somewhere.
Here's what a rod is. Gawd knows what that is in square yards though! My allotment is 40feet x 80feet and is regarded as a "standard" plot. Whatever that is....Val.0 -
"51/2 yards = one rod, pole, or perch......"
I had to recite that every morning when I was in primary school.
Now I know why! :rotfl:0 -
UK food price rises the highest
Davesnave mentioning Tesco earlier, stopped shopping there when own brand bread flour went up overnight from 61p to £1.29. Not surprised the UBS report singled out fats for special mention, up 15.7%
Fruit & Veg up a paltry 7% and 6.3%, that'll be covered by pay rises. Not. :cool:0 -
I've made cider the proper way , chopping then pulping and then pressing the apples, it took about a day to fill one barrel and the first time the results were great the second time we threw the lot away. As we had to wait 9 months to find this out we were moderately gutted!
However if you want a quick easy recipe for 10 pints that always works for us and you can do it now try this.
Simple Cider
3lb cooking apples
12 pints water
2lb granulated sugar
3 lemons
Clean the apples, cut them up and mince them with the cores and skins. Place in an earthenware bowl and add cold unboiled water. Leave for one week, stirring night and morning. Strain the liquid. Stir in sugar and add the grated rind and juice of the lemons. Set aside for 24 hours then stain and bottle tightly. This can be drunk within a few days of making but gets stronger and tastes better if left for a few months.C.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z Able Archer0 -

Vegetable oil was 97p in Sains just before Xmas, the week after Xmas it had jumped to £1.55!!!!! Dread to think how much further it's going to climb.
