Cash back con

Hi,
Not sure if any one else has come across this con.
You visit your local supermarket and purchase quite a few items and as you are paying by CC or DD card the cashier may ask you if you want any cash back.
You say no thanks and pay for all your shopping and leave the store.
You get home and have a quick look at the receipt and find you have an amount on there that is for cash back even though you did not ask for it.
It seems that whilst you were paying a friend of the cashiers has come up behind you and she passes the money onto them so even if the cashier is searched they will have no money on them.
This is one of the easiest cons around at present so please check your receipt before leaving the store, as it will be to late once your home.

Yeah Ive heard of that, but the one I heard was implying it was on cc's

One problem, you cant get cashback on CC's so this to me sounds like one of the fake emails that circulate (ive certainly never been offered cashback on CC)

And everytime I get cashback on DC they always circle the amount and ask you to check it, and I always check my receipt anyway which tbh everyone should

  • Oh no, not this one again; from a first-time poster, no less; who posted on the stoozing board. Whatever happened to the advice to lurk on a forum for a while before posting? Ho hum.

  • There is never cash-back offered on credit card transactions, this is because the charging structure for credit card transactions to that of debit card transactions is quite different for both the retailer and the card holder.

The retailer pays a set (small) fee of a couple of pence to process a debit card transaction, and if they're already paying it for your shopping, its doesnt make any cost difference to them to give you cash back. However credit cards charge the retailer a percentage of the transaction, and hence the larger the transaction value the more they pay. If they gave you cash-back, they would therefore be losing money on the value of the charge on that cash.

If you get cash back at a point of sale or check-out you always have the option to see the transaction value before you enter your PIN to confirm the tranaction, and I cant see therefore how someone could add cash to your transaction without you seeing it clearly in front of you.
