Am I getting ripped off by a Corgi?

I am just about to have a new gas fire installed.

It involves knocking a little bit of wall out because the fire has to sit in-between the cavity walls. The fire is a balanced flue type.

I already have a gas supply near the fire - which was capped when an old gas fire was removed.

The corgi geezer (gas plumber) says it will cost circa £300.

Before I say yes, can anyone advise am I about to be ripped off or is £300 usual for this type of thing.

thanks

  • Hi Holeypockets,
I suppose it depends on where you live in the country. I am in Nth Lincs and had a gas fire fitted today.
I had a small amount of wall taken off and I had the pipes put under the floorboards. and it cost me £120.
The fitter is genuine corgi registered ( checked on line) he said that he charges £60 an hour although he was here for 2.5 hours he had already quoted me the price of which he stuck too and a very nice man as well.

So £300 i feel is a little excessive - get some more quotes to see if he is in the ball park or not - I did.

    Cheers

    I agree with Beetrooper.

If you log on to the Corgi website and put your postcode in it gives you the names of Corgi registered plumbers in your area.

Just a tip from personal experience ......

Make sure that the guy shows you his Corgi card (it is a requirement that they carry this around) - this should also have their photograph on it, make sure you get a receipt with a company letter head and VAT Reg number etc. and pay him by cheque (made payable to the name of the company that is on your receipt).

If the plumber refuses any of the above, then keep on looking.

Although there is a lot of work out their for plumbers, there are also a lot of plumbers looking for work !! so don't be rushed or intimidated.
