I haven't even bought my daughter a doll. I think they're repulsive things - particularly the ones that wee and poo.

Do not buy a boy a doll.

What? Why not? Sorry, but I think this is completely ridiculous. Going by that, perhaps I should not have bought my daughter a train set for Christmas, or allow her to play with her Dad's old toy cars or any other "boyish" toys she might like to play with. She's 2 and a half by the way. God forbid we don't adhere to out of date stereotypes and allow them to make up their own minds.

I think it's a great gift for a little boy who's getting a sibling. He's likely to see his mummy and daddy caring for the newborn and will want to join in. Giving him a baby doll to play with will help him understand and get involved. It's not like the only things available are pink and flowery. I say go for it :)

i don't see any problem in buying a boy a doll if he wants it let him have it,i know plenty of little boys who have dolls and pushchairs in the same way my 6 year old girl has loads of cars garages and lego.

Wasn't there a thread on here or somewhere else where the boy wanted pink shoes?

  • Wow, thanks for all the replies!

I don't agree with the poster who point blank said not to buy a boy a doll although I appreciate the input. My nephew loves trains, cars, footballs etc so in that sense is a typical boy but he also loves flowers and his Mum often buys him a cheap bunch when they've been shopping as he loves them so much. Neither his parents, nor I, go in for stereotyping so he is allowed to play with anything that he enjoys playing with - whether that be intended for boys or girls - especially at such a young age does it really matter what he plays with. If he was an older child I have to admit I'd worry about him getting picked on by other kids but at 2 1/2 that's not a consideration!

I think after reading the replies I'll go for a 'boy', a small soft bodied one (like the look of the mothercare baby cupcake one) so he can cuddle it more effectively - I didn't know they did them, my childhood dolls were hard plastic but very much loved! Hadn't thought about accesories either so thanks for that tip, will get him a little set to go with it too. I am shocked to find that dolls are anatomically correct nowadays :rotfl:

As I said before I'll be getting him a few other little pressies too so if he's not interested in the doll he will have other new things to play with.

My son has pink shoes. http://www.treds.co.uk/product/kids-classic-slip-on/14927

he has the pink and black version. Nothing wrong with boys wearing pink shoes, pink shirts or anything pink for that matter....he also had dolls.

He also has drums, rides a bmx and its quite possibly the most ungirly boy you would ever see (apart from his long hair)

There is absolutely no problem with getting a doll, and I think a boy doll is the right thing to do.

My son had a boy doll around the same time, and it was fantastic when his little sister came along. He even did his breastfeeding at the same time as me!
Dunno why, but you are failing to sell the idea to me.
