Really noisey central heating pump

Hi,

I hadn't really noticed that my pump was noisey in my new house, until it was pointed out and wasn't aware they are meant to be nigh on silent. Now though, as I am aware of it, it is driving me mad and is actually pretty bad as I can hear it throughout the house. The noise is a kind of clicking grindy noise and happens when both the hot water and the central heating is on. I've had a look online but not really found much information out, I have however bled the radiators and then run the heating follwed by another bleeding session to no avail.

I've also tried to bleed the pump by the plastic bolt on the front of the pump but has had no water come out of it. The pump is a British Gas Multihead 2, made by Myson and I have the setting at 2/3. Does anyone know if this is a good pump? Also, has anyone had a similar problem in the past and been able to fix it?

If it is a dead pump and I need to replace it then what kind of pump should I go for? I'm in a three bed semi running an open central heating system (?) with 1 large radiator, 3 normal and 5 small ones.

Thanks for any help in advance.

No myson pumps have ever been any good.

Your one will only get worse and may let you down unexpectedly.

get it replaced, or DIY. Go for a Grunfoss, the 15/50 will normally suffice, unless you have a large system, microbore pipes or both.

I had this with a Grundfoss pump and it eventually failed and I replaced it, the GF's pump which I managed to unjam by unscrewing the silver blanking plate and spinning the spindle with a screwdriver, funnily enough it still works 2 years on.

Keep an eye out on it.
  • Thanks for the input, looks like I need to get myself a new one. Will look at the Grunfoss 15/50 as I have standard copper piping and I'd say the set up is fairly normal. Sounds like a job for the weekend!

When mine failed it took me 15 mins to replace, remember to scrape the original remnants of the rubber washers from the fittings and to fit the new ones as I forgot to do, hmmmmmmmm new pump fitted "oh whats this in the bottom of the box ahhhh two rubber washers" so had to undo the pump again lol but it was 7 in the morning.

Keep the old one going as it could be gunk/grunge blocking the pumps impellers so give it a sharp tap with a tool.
  • It does sound like it is dying with the grinding noises. Will order one and give it a go some time as it's only a couple of fixings and electrical connections, something I should be able to handle. Not too bad for an accountant... haha
