Next exchange without receipt

Can anyone advise me and where I stand here...

My parents bought me a shirt from Next for Christmas. Frustratingly they didn't keep the receipt and unfortunately the shirt is too big.

As all the tags were still intact I thought there was a good chance I could exchange it. When I took it back today they said it should be fine, however after scanning the barcode they said the shirt was showing as having already been returned and therefore they couldn't swap it without a receipt.

I've since contacted my parents and they have confirmed that the shirt was bought at normal price (i.e. not sale or returns), therefore I'm at a loss as to know what to do.

To make matters worse I've just wasted 20 minutes on the phone to the customer service team who were pretty useless, even the store support department weren't able to help with any in-store purchases!:(

How did they pay? Cash? Debit/credit card? Cheque?
  • how can thy know its already been returned? barcodes on for example a shirt in large would be the same for all those shirts in large surely? how can they tell your particualr one has already been returned?. you should be able to exchange it at any next store what may happen is that they will only exchange at the current price of the shirt

Will need to check but I think they will have paid with credit or debit card.

As the items not faulty there's no right to refund anyway. But try a different store.

I agree. Surely the barcode on the shirt is just the product code which applies to all the shirts not one particular one?

It might be possible if they had only recently sold one of these shirts in that particular size. If this was the case, it would be the only sale showing when they scanned the barcode.
Unlikely I know, but I can't think of anything else. (either that or the sales assistant didn't know what they were doing).
