Bank pays out monthly standing order twice

My bank yesterday paid out the last instalment of my council tax monthly standing order twice.

They are trying to tell me that it is my responsibility to sort it out with the council and that they cannot do it.

Are they right?

Assuming it is a standing order, I'd tell them they had instructions to make the payment once only. If they've not followed your instructions I'd make them do the work. If they refuse again, make a formal complaint. If it's a direct debit tell them you want to claim under the direct debit guarantee.

You need to confirm how the standing order was set up.

Who set the standing up was it yourself or the bank?

The issue now is with standing orders is that they can not be recalled now they go via faster payments.

I set it up online with a different first payment and a final payment date.

    Thanks

Why they cannot do it? It's bank mistake. I think you must take an action. They are fully wrong. I am with you. You must be write an application for correct this big problem. I think this may be happen in future again. So resolve it now. Quickly.

If it is a standing order, the amount will be credited to your council tax account therefore you should be in credit on your council tax account. As this is January it should be your last payment therefore you should be in credit by one installment amount. The council will issue a refund to you upon request - except of course if you are in arrears with your council tax. Should be quite simple to sort out

So did you inadvertently authorise two payments?

    If so, it's your responsibility.

If not, the bank should, in the ideal world, do the chasing. But the local authority will almost certainly delay refunding on the bank's request and make contact with you before doing anything.

So it might actually be quicker for you to ring the LA and sort it anyway.

I'm sure you could ask the bank for a modest ex-gratia payment - and ensure you don't get any charges as a result.

Is your bank Santander, by any chance?

They messed up my voluntary NI payments by typing my NI number incorrectly.

They told me that they could not fix it (a simple typo). I had to cancel my direct debit with HMRC and have HMRC issue another one.

So if it is Santander, don't be suprised if they tell you that something is not their responsibility even if the problem was caused by their making a mistake.

NB: I no longer bank with Santander so nobody needs to advise me to switch banks.

Lloyds TSB by any chance and the standing order was due to be paid on 31st December?

Wasn't that just payments made using a card?

I agree with other users that it depends on the instruction.

    If you state on a mandate;

£100 Monthly on the 3rd of each month starting from 3rd January, and they don't recieve the form until the 4th, they may send an immediate first payment to adhere to a payment being made in January, and the 3rd being for payments thereafter. It really depends on the mandate, the date received etc.

Edit, just read post again. You set up online, so what exactly did you stipulate on the instruction?
    Best Regards

    zppp :)
