I had a camping themed sleepover for my son's 8th birthday. Set up a tent in his room, put lots of blankets & pillows in.....(although my son has been dry at night since he was 2 read a few threads on MSE suggesting some people who had boys of this age to sleep over ended up with wet beds!)....so felt the tent was safer!!
We invited them round from 5.30pm, had set up a little treasure hunt in the garden, we also hid lots of little plastic small soldiers (the cheap small plastic green ones that come in packs of 50), the child who collected the most received a prize and played injured solider, put them into teams of 3 - 1 had to be injured the other 2 had to bandage (wrap in toilet roll (tesco value 12 rolls about £2) from head to toe) and carry them on a blanket from one end of the garden to the other, winners were first team to arrive....its was hilarious, they wanted to play this lots of times taking turns to be the injured one.
I love this website when planing a party, http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com/html/party_ideas.html it's other parents sharing how/what they did for every imaginable themed party.
Whilst we were playing the games sent OH to take away for pizza, chicken & chips.
They then went upstairs to watch DVD's, I gave them a big bowl of popcorn, bowl of crisps, sweets etc
I ordered a Horrid Henry Birthday kit £5 from the Book People http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=184313 contained bunting, party bags, balloons, 10 story books, 10 activity books & sets of colouring pencils.
It must have been a success as they all ask when they can come again!:hello:0 -

If you have a decent size back garden what about a winter bbq? burgers and hot dogs are quite inexpensive. you could also do a treasure hunt - you dont need loads of prizes - but hiding chocolate coins in various places so that they all 'find' something and a torch or something similar as the main prize? kids love sleepovers but if you cant face that, then perhaps they could have a 'stay out late' night? (arranged with parents permission of course), after the bbq and treasure hunt you could put on a DVD for them? during which they get the ice cream or lollies!0

You could get a couple of bags of those buy two get a free blockbuster movie rental bags of sweets, get a couple of dvds, Get aload of old sheets and some dining chairs if you have them and make a Den in the living room,
One of the best things i remember as a kid is my mum blindfolding me and our cousins and putting our hands in these bowls and there was things like mushed brains (bananas) eyeballs (lychees) worms (spaghetti) fingers and blood (hotdogs/chipata's and ketchup) etc.. Was so much fun and really freaky!
Tescos do good deals on the party food so you could just grab a few boxes of those, Mini hamburgers and mini hotdogs are always a success.
