I've used freecycle very successfully - got proper removals boxes for free.

I also read that the boxes that books are delivered in are good, so you can try your local Waterstones, sounds like you might be sorted with those archive boxes though, they are perfect size, you don't want anything very big unless it's bulky stuff that isn't too heavy. Do not put all of your books in one massive box because no-one will be able to lift it!

If you contact someone who supplies boxes wholesale and to the public they are always cheaper than buying them from anywhere else and they are proper removal boxes eg double ply so they can actually stacked which you can't do with most normal boxes.

I use Hunnex and Sons a lot for work when buying boxes, if you ask companies like this they often sell second hand removal boxes (They are in very very good condition). They normally cost about 50p each, you have to ask though as they won't offer them unless you ask.

A good tip to remember when packing is the heavier the stuff you are putting in the box then the smaller the box should be, basically use small boxes for books and don't put to many in as you will struggle to lift them.

P.S Do not use mad4boxes as they are very poor quality
  • try Mcdonalds!!! I used to work there as a teenager and we used to get alot of people coming in and asking for them! or even phone them in advance. Sometimes we asked for a donation towards the Mcdonalds charity.
I used them when moving into uni, quite sturdy, one hint go for the fries boxes, they're the best!!! :)
  • Also try your local pizza place. When I moved they gave me all their boxes for free (ones that hold their food/produce not the flat pizza boxes lol) and they were sturdy enough to do the job, and didn't get too heavy because of the size so they were ideal for things like books and dvds, shoes etc. They used to have 5 or 6 a day and my bro lived next to them so he'd just take them from them and keep them for me.

You can check with small local firms too as not a lot of them will have straight-to-recycle facilities. Another place I got boxes from was a friend who works for cash-register suppliers.

Don't forget to ask around family and friends - someone may know someone who has boxes!

    Good luck,

    Az

Ask at bookshops - their boxes tend to be a manageable size and pretty sturdy.

As others have said, supermarkets fold and bale most of their boxes, for recycling (paid).

I'm looking to buy some good quality boxes, so far help I need boxes seems pretty good value and there's a 10% discount code I can use. The online quote came to about £30 for 12 medium single wall boxes and 4 archive boxes including delivery. Does anyone know of a better deal?

I'd definitely recommend archive boxes for moving. I bought a couple of dozen a few years ago from a stationers and they've seen us through heaven knows how many house moves. They're strong, sturdy, and you can't really overfill them. They collapse easily too, and can be reassembled quickly. They're not free, but it's saved us so much trouble having to scratch around for boxes whenever we've had to move. Given how much use we've had from them, they really have been a good investment. They're handy for storage too, as they've got lids and they're stackable.

    I second this, almost word-for-word.

Document storage boxes, or archive boxes, from stationers, or larger cash-and-carry stores and supermarkets.
