How has BR affected you? and your lives?

Myself and DH have our BR hearing next week, and I am getting so worried about it! Wondering if its the right thing to do etc! But also, I've read some stories and people say its the best thing they have ever done! But then I see some stories and comments which scare me! Like about insurances etc and that it stays in the gazette forever etc! I have a few friends how have been BR, now discharged, and they all say best thing ever! But surely if it was that simple everyone would do it? I would really appreciate hearing peoples experiences with their situations.

BR should only be used as a last resort and there is still a stigma attached to it which is why 'everyone' doesn't do it. Also, not everyone is insolvent so they wouldn't be able to just dump their debt anyway.

For me, I certainly have no regrets. It can be hard on a relationship and there are subsequently breakdowns but some people seem to grow closer together. I know in my case it was close to a relationship breakdown but we survived and it is nearly 3 years since my BR - 2 years 9 months and 1 day to be exact!

    :j :j

  • Have you found things in every day life hard since? Have you been "snubbed" because of the BR at any point?

I should add, we've been in constant contact with NDL who have been amazing for about a year now on and off, and still coming to the same conclusion, which is that BR is our only option....we are in far too deep. NDL said this to me about 6 mths ago, but I wanted to try to sort it ourselves, but needless to say, we've got nowhere!

I don't shout about my bankruptcy and have only told very few friends and a couple of colleagues so I haven't been snubbed at all. Also, back when I went BR they used to put it in the local papers. Not sure if mine went into our local paper, I did check but didn't see it so am fairly sure it didn't. If you google my address it does come up but thankfully now it is pages down and you'd really have to persevere to find it. Still, all the stress etc I had before BR with creditors, not sleeping etc it has all been worth it.

I haven't applied for any kind of credit so haven't been declined. As for other day to day things it is all positive. I was really in a dark place pre-BR not knowing how to get out of the situation and move forward. I don't dwell on my BR and I'm not ashamed of it - it happened and I've moved on. I tried a business venture, it didn't work out, I ended up bankrupt - still I'm glad I tried.

Use it as a fresh start.

It is'nt simple, and probably not everyone does it, but then who can say. Who ever knows what is happening in someone else's life? You only have to read the comments from people on here, to find how difficult it is. Its the unknown probably for most.

But if you get to the stage where there is no other option than bankruptcy, then its obviously the best thing for you, and you will look back and say its the best thing you ever did, despite the consequences

Good luck for the coming weeks x

The actual bankruptcy is an anti climax, i feel, for most, although its easy to say. But you will get through it.

I was so like that too. One of my friends said I should go br in January and it took me until October to realise it was only option. :D

Edited to say no regrets so far

You're right - the lead up to bankruptcy is by far the hardest bit. Once you've accepted your decision draw a line under it and move on. You will be amazed that you smile and laugh again. People don't realise what impact stress has on your daily life and your health until they no longer have the stress.
