resigned due to stress - entitled to benefits?

My 31 year old daughter has had resign her job, which she was in for 4 years, due to an overload of stress - personal and work-related and has moved to Wales to be close to family. Once she is back on an even keel she plans to go self-employed, until then would she be able claim any benefits - does anyone know?

    Lots of factors to look at first...
    Is she well now and available and actively seeking work?
    Was the previous job full time and she paid N.I. conts for the last two years?


    If so she will be eligible to make a claim for JSA but they will investigate her reason for leaving her previous employment. She will need to prove she took steps to try to resolve the issues before leaving.

    If she is still unwell she will need to see her G.P and make a claim for ESA

    Too many variables here to give a straight answer. Best bet is to attend Job Seekers appointment as soon as possible.

    There is a DWP benefits calculator here although things like savings, method of resigning, documented medical history at last employer, any possible future constructive dismissal case, children, place to live and so on will need to be taken into consideration.

    There may be a delay in paying any benefits but get the ball rolling straight away.
  • Thanks for your replies, my daughter is still on the 'sick' so not looking for work. We realise that she wouldn't be entitled to JSA because she resigned but we don't know about her entitlement to any sickness related benefits with her resigning. Yes she worked full-time and paid NI contributions for the last 2 years. She has seen her GP and has another 'sick-'note' till the end of this month so I will look into her making a claim for ESA and get her to speak to the Job Centre.
