seems silly to fill your car to the brim for the VAT rise it just makes it heavier and means it will use more fuel so it would probably cost you more money

Petrol is about 80% the weight of water (by volume).

So for example if by filling right to the brim puts in an extra 5 litres, it's only going to weigh 4kg more. Not much when considering a 1,500 kg car.

But a tank full of petrol/diesel weighs probably 65kg which is an unneccessary load and will negate any fuel saving over driving with a 1/4 tank full.

I also think it was the "brimmers", ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I'd not brim the tank for the VAT rise, but I brim the tank every time I fill up..... (or should I say I just wait for it to stop on it's own) I hate petrol stations with a vengeance! I especially hate people who do their weekly shop (before paying for their £3 worth petrol) and leave the car parked next to the f*cking pump!
So the less often I have to fill up, the better for my sanity!

I also refuel at 1/4, which gives me plenty of time to find a petrol station if my regular happens to be closed. Unlike the above mentioned idiots who find their regular station is closed, go off to find another one and then run out of fuel on a major traffic island in rush hour traffic

That'd be an 80 litre fuel tank (petrol)

By not filling up you will need to stop more often for petrol, thus wasting fuel.

My car has a 50 litre tank. When full this weighs 40kg more than when it is empty, or 20kg more than when half full. Do I think this makes much difference to a 1,400 kg with my burly mass sat in it? Nope

  • 65 kg that you dont really need to be dragging around well obviously you need a bit of it

i think a litre of petrol weighs 740grams something like that i remember this from my days of go karting and needing to make sure the kart came in at the minimum weight

Spilt diesel kills bikers. Brimming a tank is the number one cause of spills - and it is worse in summer as the diesel comes out of cold underground tanks then starts to expand as it warms up to the ambient temperature and spills out of the tank overflow. Almost as big a problem is trucks forgetting to put the fuel cap back on the tank.

Anyone who cares (or anyone who is ignorant of the problem and feels they need to know more) should take a look at http://www.killspills.org.uk - especially the stuff in the downloads section

  • You must live way out in the sticks if it takes 1/4 of a tank to find an open petrol station at night.
