Best value MoT?

I always have a good look under the car when it's on the ramps, and a good look for any oil leaks out of the engine as well.0

I get mine done at Nationwide autocentres, their AA discount is very generous and seems to be a permanent offer. Also when work does need to be done they don't tend to rip you off.0

I worked for them when they were Lex Autocentre, then Nationwide. Now apparently they're owned by Halfords? :eek:I get mine done at Nationwide autocentres, their AA discount is very generous and seems to be a permanent offer. Also when work does need to be done they don't tend to rip you off.0 -
I did my MOT last year and initially booked with KwikFit because of their cheap MOT offer, then read a load of bad reviews on them finding faults with items they apparently sold. i.e. brakes, pads, tyres. So I chickened out and cancelled the booking 30mins later, thinking the £10 I'd save on the MOT will probably result in spending more fixing the faults they found. I ended up going back to my regular guy who cost £40 and not linked to a garage, so there was no benefit for them in failing the MOT unnecessarily. Just for peace of mind.
The best value MOT is one you don't have to spend extra after visiting the test center.

I had my MOT done with Kwik fit last year, it was free due to being insured via them for the year.
Before I tookthe car my dad, who is a mechanic and does MOT's had a look over the car and said that the visual stuff was fine although the tyres didnt have long left, it would be emissions etc that could cause a problem. Either way he gave me a sheet he has stating tyre mm length and the rules on lights etc.
Took the car, popped to meet a friend while they did it, got a phone call "sir you need 3 new tyres, £95 each plus fitting if you want like for like..."
"really? ill be up in 5 to have a look, dont touch it yet..."
"erm... ok sir... we got the tyres here ready..."
"no, wait there, i want to come and look myself..."
So i popped up, asked the tester to show me which 3 tyres they were, pulled out my dads sheet on mm lengths, and got out the little tester he had given me... tested the tyres, all within the limits, and asked them why they were failing my MOT. they said they were not failing it, but the tyres would need changing within a few months!
I got my certificate off them, and told them the tyres could wait...
I changed the tyres, like for like, for £70 each (my dad fitted them) a few weeks later...
People just need to be aware in future...0
