Bank Charges

Advice please. Have just received bank statement from Abbey stating they will be charging me £50 on the 17th November for paying a direct debit on my behalf because there were insufficient funds in my account to cover a direct debit (the amount was actually £1 less than what was in my account). Have spoken to the bank and basically they said tough. Told them I was going to close the account (have been a customer for 15 years) and still they wouldn't relent. Have just applied on line and have been accepted for a new account with A&L so transfer to new account in progress. Should I make sure there are no funds in the Abbey account so that they cant take out the £50 charge on the 17th or leave money there to cover it and try and claim it back another way.

I would make sure there is enough money in the account, otherwise they will charge you again and that will probably be £100.
Have you used recommend a friend for alliance and leicester? If so you will be getting £50 anyway, so if it was me I'd just think I'd lost £50, I'd gained £50 well so be it. PM me if you want more information on recommend a friend - you can do it after you've applied.
If that happened to me just once, I wouldn't fight it, I think it's up to me to make sure there is enough money in my account.
