Viking Airlines - April 2010 Ash Cloud

Hi, New here.
I have been trying to get refund from Viking Airlines for accommodation/meals etc for my party of three stranded for 4 days in Malaga due to the ash cloud . As you may be aware, Viking is undergoing "financial restructuring" and has filed for bankruptcy protection in Sweden. I have been considering trying to get a refund from MBNA Mastercard as I used this to pay for the flights. Flights were return flights Glasgow-Malaga and were in excess of £100 each. Before I try this, I'd appreciate some advice. I paid Travel Republic for the flights, who in turn paid Kiss Flights. Kiss has gone bust and Viking look like they are heading that way. Has anyone else tried this and been successful in their claim under S 75? I'm claiming 635 Euros and I have all receipts etc.

Thanks.

  • Did the flights run and did you travel on them? If so you have no case for supplier failure, as they did not. The CC comapny will also not entertain any claims above and beyond the original cost of the flights. So, in a word, useless.
  • My understanding was that they also had joint and several liability for the airline's duty of care for meals/accommodation etc (as per the S75 guide on this site)?

Sorry as you didn't book directly with the airline and went via Travel Republic, Section 75 protection would only match liabilities of Travel Republic (ie to supply a ticket), they would not have a joint liability with the airline to provide accomodation etc. (as the airline was not party to the original transaction, they were paid by Travel Republic, not by you)
