Sagem set top box

some advice please. i bought a Sagem DTR6400t/6700T in May 09 . Every couple of months or so it would not record programmes/allow live pause etc so i would do a 'restore factory settings' as advised in the user manual & it woud work ok again.
i did a restore 3 days ago and when it was completed i got sound but the picture was frozen and only moved about every 60 seconds. It is not responding to the remote control or channel & power buttons on the box itself.
i've phoned Sagem tech support who went thro various attempts to get it going, but the guy said it sounds like the unit is faulty/broken but would not have expected it to be so after only 18 months. However, as it is out of the 12 month warranty period there was nothing they could do.
Having read the info on this site am right in thinking i can ask the retailer (Argos) for a repair? do i have to get an engineers report first to show that the unit must have been inherently faulty, or is it enough to approach them with a request to repair based just on the fact that it is reasonable to expect the unit to work for more than 18 months?
any advice is appreciated
