Moving away for first time

They're only 14-18 miles away though, which isn't far for a young couple who are prepared to move across country. But then I looked it up.Problem with Canterbury is that most of the jobs that require the languages are either in Ashford or Folkestone (Eurostar/call centres)
Surrey to Canterbury's only 80 miles.... I thought this was a big move, but it's not.
On the basis it's only 80 miles away, I'd apply for jobs from where you are, then move once you have one.0 -
Several of my colleagues are from Scotland (we're in East Anglia). They all applied for their respective jobs first, travelled down for the interview and then moved after they got the job. You'd presumably have at least a month to find somewhere to live first, as you'd have to give notice, and you could ask to postpone starting the new job for an extra week or two if necessary to find somewhere and move. Moving to another part of the country without a job lined up, especially in the current climate, seems risky. If you couldn't find anything, you'd be a bit screwed.0

It is a big move to me because I have never done it like this before. The last time I moved it was about 5 miles.
Thanks for all the suggestions anyway, we might find a place and rent it for one of us whilst we look for work as the prospects of finding a job when we live 80 miles away seem quite remote.0 -
I moved from Canterbury to the North West London area about 5 years ago and had to have interviews whilst still living in Kent. It was quite a struggle and I had to carefully plan before I went but it was the best thing I ever did.
My story is slightly different in that my boyfriend already had a job in the area, and was actually commuting himself before we moved. We managed to find a flat in less than a month in order to complete the move.
I would advise that at least one of you has to find a job before you go - and that you should attempt to find jobs from where you are now.
BTW - Canterbury is a lovely place. At the time I moved as I had been a student there and wanted to go to London. I would definitely go back to live there someday.0
