£500 would be a typical offer for the bank to make you, but as others say, nothing stops you making an initial offer high0

in respect of claiming back my bank charges i paid a tenner to the rbs and asked for all the details they held on me......as i had had to flee the family home due to domestic violence 2 1/2 years earlier and for 2 of those years had been living in domestic violence hostels...i had to leave the first because he found out where i was and then move to another out of the area...away from my kids etc...anyway they sent dpa details to my new address but then a week later sent the same stuff again plus a few details that they had obviously ommited to put in the first batch by special delivery to my ex violent partners address this caused absolute mahem as part of the reason for the violence although it is no excuse was catch 22 lies over money debt etc he hit me so i lied about debt he found out i lied so he hit me so the next time the bills didnt get paid i lied he hit me etc etc
anyway cut a long story short all hell broke loose and i had to leave my new address which i had waited 21/2 years to get due to him finding out where i was living and causing trouble at the time although i mentioned it to the bank manager i didnt push it its almost 1 year ago now is it to late to follow the same path and ask for compensation tha manager apologied and said i should put it in writing along with my request for reclaiming my charges which i am only just getting around to now...am under the doctor with stress and depression problems as well as other health issues
how should i word it and any help guys much appreciated thanks
do i ask the bank for as a figuere of speech £2000 in compensation and take it for there or just leave it to them to make me an offer in the first instance dont want to be fobbed off as the rbs seem to be very good at that
also my dpa showed that i was in a domestic violence refuge because there were notes about returned to sender mail....i had to leave the first hostel in a hurry and therefore mail got returned to the bank before i had chance to tell them off my address change and this was help on my records

I'm sorry to hear about that, I suggest you speak to Citizens Advice or something, or get the 30 mins of free legal advice and get the compensation you deserve for the chaos they caused  In terms of wording, I'd just put it down and be clear, concise and accurate. Don't woffle, just be firm in the letter and state what you want and explain why it's their fault you were inconvenienced and placed in danger. Perhaps a report from the relevant authority who looks after your housing arrangements would help?
Best of luck

There are always the tabloids who will no doubt be interested to hear about this "lapse in security"
I bet the bank will suddenly increase the amount on offer when you mention interest from the press... :rotfl:

I think in these cases the compensation should reflect the loss rather than include a punishment element - obviously for some of the cases mentioned the loss has been considerable - whereas if my info was sent to a stranger who immediately got in contact and it went no further then I wouldn't have lost out too badly and 100 compensation might be reasonable - to cover the time and expense of switching to a more reliable bank. Interesting stuff about the IC - I have the same initals as my dad and a long time ago had an account at my parents address. When my parents moved the banks clever computer also updated the address on my account to my parents new address even though that had not been the accounty address for more than 5 years and obviusly we have different dob etc so obviuosly a system error rather than a one off human errorI think....0

While its really rubbish to have your information provided to someone else incorrectly it does happen at least often enough for banks to have a reporting procedure for breaches of the DPA - their Data Protection Officers (which they must have) compile all breaches and send them to the information commisioners office with a breif explination (in a coded format) - if there is not an exessive amount - and they are true accidents they don't lodge any complaint or fine.
The media, I am sure, is also aware that this happens so would not report unless there is a mass cluster case....
In my experience offers for compensation could be as low as £25 through to (and very, very rarely) £1000. Banks are bound to make sure you have not suffered a loss - or undue distress.
Only in exeptional cases would i imagine that the Ombudsman would rule in excess of £250.
You can sound greedy when making a compensation view and if the bank does not believe they can settle they are likely to not try and let the Ombudsman deciede - it's your call but I would'nt pitch at over £500.00 (and expect half at best.)
....IMHO
