Playback on audiobooks - wobbly effect!

Anyone else had this problem. The reader's voice is very wobbly and has a kind of echo. The 1st audiobook downloaded from itunes was fine; 2nd book had the problem from the start and I gave up listening; 3rd book was fine and listened all the way through but when listening to it again the wobbly voice effect has started. It happens when listening to the books through ipod earpiece and through logitech speaker but not when listening through my laptop.
