Hi Folks
Thinking of going to Dublin and just want an idea of prices I will have to pay for food and drink, For example how much would I expect to pay for a pint of beer, a glass of wine and a meal.
If I got a taxi costing 15 euros is it acceptable to give 1 euro as a tip or is more expected.?? Same with tips in restaurants,What is the form.?
I will be taking hopefully sufficient euros but if I run out will they accept sterling instead?
I am expecting to pay about 50% more in Dublin. Would this be about right?
Thanks

A pint of Guinness is approximately 5 euro and a meal in a pub starts at 10 euro.
It's not cheap0 -
Everything is expensive and the people are whingy. Not bother.0

A fantastic city with fantastic people. The previous poster has obviously been somewhere entirely different to the Dublin i know.:D0

Quite right. I only live there, what would I know.0

I've just come back from visiting friends and relitives. Go a few times a year. Even in the present dire economic climate, people are still just trying to make the best of it,- not whingy at all, and they have a lot to whinge about with the current cuts. I would say there is far more whinging over here!
Also, it's a complete misconception that it is more expensive than any other Euro zone country. Try Germany or Belgium! What about London? A fantastic city but ludicriously expensive and over inflated.
Finally, sometimes you get what you pay for,- wherever you choose to travel.0 -

Agreed. I didn't find Dublin that much more expensive than many other European cities. In general, if you're using the Euro, it's not going to be cheap - no matter where you are.
There are decent deals to be had. The last time I went, we picked up a cracking three course meal just off Temple Bar for €15 a head - I'd have a bloody hard time finding that in Leeds, let alone London. I also found the attractions very reasonably priced.
If you're going to spend a weekend drinking in tourist trap bars then yes, it will be expensive but then again, so is a weekend on the ale on La Ramblas, by the Eiffel Tower or around Trafalgar Square.
As for the people, we had a fantastic time with them. It's a great city with great people.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Thanks for replies. I think I have the picture now.
Keep away from the tourist traps and have a good time with the real people.0 -
hi there rathmines is not in Dublin centre you need to get a bus or taxi into the centre but having stayed there its ok and a few bars around you which were good for a night out also up the road was a good bar for a meal think it was called Madisons been about a year from I was there but would go back anytime. One thing is make sure you have change for the bus as we got onto a bus one night and tryed to give bus man 5 euro note ,he asked for correct change and after I told him I had only arrived his next words were "get off my F*****g bus" and as we stepped back onto the path he closed the doors and drove of ,this happened about a year ago but we laugh every time we think about it0
