One of the hotels I stayed in was priced at well over £100 a day until I called them directly and negotiated down to £50 a day.

My opinion is that if you stay in a £50 or £150 a night hotel - the staff are the same and probably on similar wages. The food is more or less the same (especially the Thai food).

The main difference is the luxury, the location and proximity to the beach and amenities.

In that case getting a £200 hotel for £100 would be exceptionally money saving! Sure the OP would love that.

Thai hotel staff have a basic salary that is heavily supplemented by the 10% service charge levied on the price of hotel rooms and food etc. So more expensive rooms tend to equate to better paid staff.

I do very much like Bo Phut - so would suggest starting there!

Thank you all for your suggestions, I appreciate that £100 a night is fairly expensive for Koh samui. I will be researching some of the hotels people have mentioned, contacting the hotel direct might be a good idea does it really knock down the price that much?? (Compared to trip advisor and sites such as hotels combined). I suppose we are looking for a hotel with great views, Jaccuzzi in the room or just outside and beautiful beaches. If anybody has any other advice for our trip to thailand please say.

When we went last year, we booked everything ourselves. The main flights was with Emirates which gives you 30kg of luggage, join there frequent flyer club(free) and you can choose your seats on the planes.
All our internal flights was with Bangkok Airways which gives 20kg luggage as standard so it's pointless having 30kg for the main flights. If you join Bangkok Aiways Frequent Flyer club(free) you get 30kg of luggage !
Also Bangkok Airways has great free VIP lounges with free internet, soft drinks, sandwiches etc just show your boarding card to enter.

Very good service and rooms but its not on the beach (as you would expect) and its a bit of a hill climb to get there.

You would also need transport but its in a good position.

I always recommend http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g293918-d1062863-Reviews-The_Lodge-Koh_Samui.html in Bhoput. We stayed on the ground floor and it is the best outlook of any hotel I have ever stayed at. The beach was a few steps away. The village itself is lovely and quite romantic. It's been a few years since we went, but there was a good mixture of restaurants and bars, with all price ranges catered for. There was an Italian restaurant (I forget the name EDIT: Just looked at pics, it was Villa Blanca. The OH had a fish called snowfish, not seen it since) where we managed to rack up a £40 bill! Then across the road a great little Thai eatery at 10% of that. Great memories.

Thanks for the bangkok airways tip, we are flying with Eva airways and they give us 25kg, so was wondering what we were going to do about the extra 5kg..

I've been to Koh samui several times & stayed in different hotels & resorts but my favourite is First Beach Bungalows it is at the far end of chewang beach known as chewang noi here is the link
    http://www.hotels.chiangmai-online.com/samui/firstbg.html

The swimming pool is the best I've found it's huge - pool area is lovely too & the complex is right on the beach. It's not your 5 star proberbly 3-4 star but nice location.
There are deluxe rooms which are fine or you can get a pool side bungalow or even a more expensive one's on the beach these are about £100.

I normally book via chaiangmai online as find then very competative.

Where ever you decide to stay you will have a lovely time
Can't think of a better place to go :)

Going by the most recent reviews on Trip Advisor it seems to be a place to avoid!
