Villa in Spain/Canary Islands

Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice. We are looking to book a villa for 2 adults and 2 children during August possibly in spain or canary islands. It has been a few years since we have been abroad and the villas on offer by the larger travel companies are very expensive, but the smaller private villa rentals companies are cheaper and I can get fairly decent flight prices with Monarch directly (roughly £600-£800 10 nights villa rental/£700-£800 flights).

Can anyone advise the best way to protect ourselves should any part of the holiday go wrong if we book DIY (or advise on reliable, ATOL protected villa rental companies that do not cost the earth !)

Any help would be appreciated. :T
