For those people who want their dogs to have a more homely lifestyle and to have company around the clock the home boarding is probably the best option. I am a home boarder in cardiff and we charge £17 for the first dog and £25 for 2, we also offer reductions for longer holidays. there should be home boarding near you, but most are happy to travel and meet you half way. Kennels serve a purpose and very sociable dogs can be fine there, but some dogs need a certain environment to flourish in, particularly, old, young or poorly dogs. i would agree that word of mouth is usually the best way to go.
Otherwise I would say, make sure that wherever your dog goes the person is insured and council licensed, home boarders have to follow the same rules as kennels and yet lots of people do home boarding as an easy money maker, plus the cheapest option is not always the best (neither is the most expensive necessarily!) so do your research. Any dog boarder or kennel should be happy to allow you an initial visit so you know your dog will be happy and safe.
There are great kennels and great boarders just as much as they are bad, it is the same as any business, research is the best thing you can do.
