Interesting....the boiler is a Worcester Bosch 24CDi, manufactured and installed around 1999. What I was told by the Gas Safe Engineer was that the flue was incorrectly installed, and this was the likely root cause of the boiler cutting out. He's recommended it be replaced and I'm using it 'at my own risk'.

I think my next move will to be to check out the Worcester Bosch website and see if I can find a local specialist engineer in the area to talk to. Thank you (and C_Mababejive) for your advice so far.
I thought you were going to say it was some old banger thats 20 or 30 years old !

This is a relatively new ,modern appliance !

    Do not bin it.

Worcester Bosch have their own service network.

Perhaps you could see if they can send someone?

If the boiler flue had never been correctly fitted then surely it would exhibit the problem from day one?

I notice that the BF flue terminal is still available as are many other parts...

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I did say in the original post that it was installed in 1999 :D

But seriously, thank you for the information, the link in particular. I have a number of Worcester Bosch engineers in my area to call today to help me with this.

I don't know whether the problem has been evident from day one. We only moved into the property in summer 2008 and only noticed the problem when the weather turned colder in the winter of that year. And yes, its taken two years of Mrs pumbaa nagging for me to do something about it.......;) What a terrible husband and father I am......

£2500+ for a new boiler? I recently had a whole house done from scratch with gas CH. Big combi boiler, radiators, pipework, the lot. And a few unforeseen extras too. £3200 the lot.

When you get the 'it's got to be condemned' routine, always get another opinion.

  • Have you tried Family Action, The Family Fund or the Social Fund. They all give grants towards household items for the disabled. You have to have an income below £28,000 a year to apply to the Family Fund.

You could also look at disability-grants.org as this has lots of grants for disabled children.

Family Action are very short of funds, last week they said
"These grants are an absolute lifeline for a lot of families, and that's what's so awful. We really only fund essential items – every week it's beds, bedding, washing machines, fridges, cookers – and we only help people who have run out of opportunities for statutory funding.

Like others have suggested, get another gas engineer to have a look at it. The fact that the engineer said you can use it 'at your own risk' means a repair may be both possible and reasonable.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

We chose a gasman from the Worcester Bosch site and he was a nightmare! We've got a really good guy now after asking for a recommendation from other people.

I've got about 8 quotes from a variety of heating engineers, based on replacing the existing boiler and relocating it from the kitchen cupboard (downstairs) to the airing cupboard (upstairs). Naturally this includes significant extra plumbing work, based on the fact that the existing gas feed pipe from the inlet into the property to the boiler is 15mm (not 22mm as per current standard) and would require me to rip up and replace my rather expensive wood flooring.....so there is a bit more to it than appears on the surface which I should have made more evident.

Cheapest quote around £2400, most expensive quote just a shade under £5000 (no prizes for guessing who that was......:D)

Thank you for the information. Wouldn't qualify for the first three you mention as household income exceeds £28k per year. I will most certainly take a look at the web address you mention though.
