How long does my wife need to be working before being entitled to maternity pay.

Im trying to find out if we start trying having a baby now (hoping for a Sept/Oct baby) if the wife will be entitled to Maternity leave,

She currently works for a telecoms company via a agency (hays) and has done since 6/10/2010, she is due to go perm within the next 2 weeks.

Looking on the internet i found this:
"Women who have at least 26 weeks service with their employer, 15 weeks before their expected week of childbirth are entitled to take up to 52 weeks maternity leave."

Does this mean that based on 4.33 weeks in a month she must have been with the company for 1 month before getting pregnant? (why dont they just say that instead of making it complicated!)

Also how does the temp to perm thing work, they treated as 2 seperate companys so as soon as she goes perm the 26 from 15 weeks thing starts over again?

Cheers

Ian

As Claire says - so long as she doesn't conceive until after she starts permanently, she'll be covered by their maternity deal.

Strikes me as daft, personally ;)

  • so why do they bother with this 26 weeks 15 weeks rubbish, just say nice and simple "As long as you conceive after going perm",

    Thanks for the advice
  • they make it as complicated as they can for you sometimes but if she was to conceive now she would probably be entitled to maternity allowance, this is the same as statutory maternity pay but it comes straight from the government instead of the work place, i am currently on this as i swapped jobs when i was first pregnant and did not yet know.
