Awnserphone problems....

Sorry not really sure if this is the right place to post this but basically I have a problem with my home phone and my Virgin voicemail service.
My old home phone had a built in two minute or so answer phone facility but this never picked anything up and all my messages went to the Virgin 1571 voicemail service - this phone broke and I replaced it with a phone with a proper built in awnserphone however now I never get any of my messages at all - every time I play back a message (picked up by the phone) it is just a kind of beeping tone, I check the Virgin voicemail but it never seems to pick anything up - I guess the phone gets there first. Tonight Ive been in as I heard the awnserphone pick it up - the phone rings, then the awnserphone picks it up (its a loudspeaker) and then you hear a beeping noise for ages, then a voice says 'please replace the handset' and it continues beeping... So I can only assume that the awnserphone on my phone is not working correctly or somehow it is being interfered with the Virgin voicemail. Any Ideas other than just figuring out how to turn the phone awnserphone off??

Why not turn off the Virgin Voicemail?
It is often very flakey, but you need to speak with VM and request its removal from your line profile. This has the added advantage that if you are on a call, people hear the engaged signal and are not charged, giving them the chance to call you when you are free. If after this your TAM still doesn't work as it should, get another - or get VM to switch theirs back on.0
