There was I thinking good girl, you've got your external hard drive and you backed up your pc. So when the main PC crashed (severe hard drive failure) I set up my laptop in place of the PC and connected the hard drive to recover some files.
Then I discover that having used Windows backup it is not installed on my laptop. All I can see from the external hard drive is one file that is not recognised. As there is no disc (OEM version on laptop) I can't even install NTBACKUP from disk and there is no-where in Microsoft to download it.
Help! I have a full back up on an external hard drive that I can't access?

Do you have other internet access? Could you perhaps not download some data recovery software, and use it recover what you want?0

you can download ntbackup from there bottom of the text click on Download NTBackup.0 -
If the backup you have ends in .bkf then that is an Ntbackup file. Ntbackup can be installed on most MS operating systems, and is only a couple of files. What OS do you have now, and do you have an XP cd - even from the failed PC.0

That's the problem. I can't find CD for PC so I am sure it came installed.
I have searched all of Microsoft and can't find anywhere that installs it from their website. All instructions refer to installing it from the CD!
Is there any other backup software that would recognise .bkf file? There is always light within the dark0 -
