Do I have to accept this?

Hi,

I've posted before but would like some advice about this. So my laptop is 2 years old, the hard drive gave up last year when it was crunch time for my degree so I paid £100 to have a new hard drive fitted. The motherboard also died last year, the manufacturer took it back and replaced the motherboard. Last month the motherboard went again so I complained to the online store where I bought it, said it wasn't reasonable quality, didn't last a reasonable length of time and wasn't fit for purpose hoping they'd refund (yeah right!) or give me a new one. Now they're offering to have it repaired. The computer technician i took it to to prove i didn't damage it said that this series of this brand all had this problem and it's basically just a duff machine. I don't want to have to go through all this malarky again in a year or two - do I have to?

TIA

Edited to change - motherboard went twice, not hard drive.

I'd imagine the hard drive failure is just bad luck, although they can die prematurely if they overheat or get banged about.

I'd jump at the chance of getting a free repair if I was you as I doubt they would ever give you a new one or a refund.

Thanks, this is the second time the motherboard has failed and this is the common fault according to the computer repair guy which makes me think that this is just going to keep happening.

Oh so it was the motherboard that went twice, I thought I made a mistake with my comment.

What make and model is the laptop.

OP, you have now had two year's use out of the thing.

They are never going to give you a full refund.

Also, in my opinion, they are never going to give you an exchange.

The two things that might happen are:
    a) they repair it, or
    b) they give you a partial refund based on the use you have had from it. Assume four years is the life of the laptop[1], then after two years you could perhaps expect a 50% refund.

I would jump at a free repair.

[1] no idea whether four years is the expected life of your laptop or not.

    It's a HP 6735s.

I know I have had 2 years use out of it - that isn't a lot. I paid £400 for it, I expect it to last much longer. That isn't unreasonable. I agree, I didn't expect a refund but if the machine is just going to give up all the time, I think a repair is near pointless. I will accept it if it the best I can get.

I was never informed of any life expectancy. I'd settle for a 50% refund.
