I am having to have a new alternator this month; total cost is looking to hit me at around £500 I have been advised.

    Seems a good price!

it might seem like a good price compared to the £500 you are having to pay but is your car a 1.1 clio also?

if not then how can you compare the 2 prices?

    Alternator =

    Renault Clio 1.2 12/1991>5/1996 (Eng: E7F706) Hatchback
Price: £55.55 Ex VAT (£66.66 Inc VAT) + delivery

    http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/Renault_Clio_Alternators.aspx

Even that one is £85 delivered, and you'll have to wait for the day or two with the car off the road.
New belt on top of that probably.
    An hour's labour.
Not the best price, but not horrific.
  • fit it your self it can only take 30 minutes max

probably 2 spanners for the battery 10mm & 13mm maybe 11mm (french cars are weird)

alternator normally has two bolts and then the plugs on the back

Probably takes that long to get my 106 jacked up, get the wheel off, get the axle stands under it, just to slacken the bolts to adjust the alternator belt, and then get it all back together again, let alone swop it over.
As for the Ducato van, that's somewhere down the back of the engine, at the top, under the bulkhead.
  • that must be the reason i hate french cars

Don't think it's as bad as the Vauxhall we own though, air filter out, tensioner assembly off, even an engine mount on some models.
Not like the old a series, where you barely had to bend over under the bonnet, and all you needed was a half inch spanner and socket.
Then again, the locknut on the adjuster always rusted into the alternator, so factor in the time for hacksawing that off, then drilling it out and trying to find the right size nut and bolt in the garage.
  • all my vauxhalls have been easy i think newer ones are becoming harder as they like to cover stuff up with plastic boxes and covers
  • Thanks a lot for all the help guys, picked up the car today and managed to get £20 taken off so it was £240 in all.

Wow, £500, sorry to hear that. After doing all my research though I have found a massive difference in prices for alternators depending on the make, model and engine size of your car.

    Good luck with it.
